Life is a practice, we all have a song
Find your voice and open your heart
Be sure to sing along
Life is a journey, we all have a place
Find your path and open your eyes
Go where you are safe
Life is a rhythm, we all have a beat
Find your grove and open your ears
Play until you fit
Life is a game, we all have a turn
Find your partner and open your hands
Let's share and learn

Tool: Power of My Mind

My Method

My coaching approach is authentic and creative. I listen deeply, and help you make sense of you life, search for deeper meaning and bigger purposes, so that you can make the best decision for yourself now.

I encourage stragegic collaborations and I enable you to define key issues, address core concerns, create more options so that you can make the most out of your own resources and those of whom you work with.

The PIN Model

I integrated my leadership, coaching, mediation and corporate governance trainig and created my own coaching model called the 'PIN' model. â€‹

It has been published in the Coaching Perspectives Magazine of the Association for Coaching in 2024.

POSITIONS are the first level of consciousness about what we want. These are words – what we say, attitudes – what we think, actions – what we do, and emotions – what we feel. The problem with POSITIONS is that when people are in distress, they say things they don’t mean, they can’t see biases and blind spots, they do things that are not logical, and they fight, flee, or freeze. The problem with POSITIONS is they tend to focus on who’s right and who’s wrong and get into a deadlock. This is why POSITIONS are usually not helpful: I help the coachee to move to INTERESTS.

INTERESTS are the second level of consciousness; I ask coachees about why we want it. They include values – personal belief systems; cultures – evaluating performance, persuasion, leadership, decision-making, trust, disagreeing productively, and scheduling; [ Fisher, Roger. Shapiro, Daniel. 2005. Beyond reason. USA. Penguin Group. Chapter 1: The Big Picture – Address the Concern, Not the Emotion. 15]concerns – core needs to be shared by everyone such as appreciation, affiliation, autonomy, status and fulfilling roles. The problem with INTERESTS is that there are a million reasons why people want what they want. What helps coachees accept differences and find common ground is to consider NEEDS.

NEEDS are the deepest and most important level of consciousness; it is WHAT WE MUST HAVE. They include Me – Self, You – Other, Us – A community or society, All - The whole of life.

Good Governance

How does Coaching connects with Governance ? â€‹

Good corporate governance can keep a company transpant and accountable for the sake of all the stackholders. It helps Board of Directors, company owners, CEO and Chairs run the company with duty of care and integrity and lead from the front. It is a proactive way of putting a system in place to balance the interests of all stakeholders, manage risks, develop productive organisational culture, design strateiges, report deligently, operate ethically and effectively. The result is improved reputation, quality of servies, resilience and sustainable growth. Knowing the hot topics in Corporate Governance such as Environmental and Social Governance (ESG), Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and Digital Transformation is one thing, and being able to come up with a work plan to implement is what an independent consultant can bring to the table. There is only 1% of Company Directors all over the world who has a qualification in Corporate Governance and this is why working with Selana can help ensure that your company is on the right track finanically, socially, ethically and professioanlly.

What should you do if you are experiencing a conflict or a dispute at your workplace?

89% of CEOs and Company directors says the area they most want to improve is conflict resolution. (Harvard Business Review 2013). This is because when the company directors avoid conflict, it can create a dominio effect of unproductive behaviours that may shut down the whole organisation.

In 2021, The total annual cost of managing and resolving conflict to employers in the UK is £28.5 billion (Acas, 2021).

These conflicts leave CEOs and all the stackholders feeling fraustrated and anxious becuase key relationships are broken while financial risks escalate. You feel like fight, flight or freeze, but none of these solutions can bring you a desirable result. â€‹

How Conflict Coaching and Mediation Can Make a Difference?

Conflicts are always systemic and it often starts from your interal conflicts with yourself. For example, you want to have more autonomy while you also want the benificence of your board. In this scenerio, a coach can help you priorities your higher purpose and decide what course of action is for your best interest.

Next is internpersonal conflicts arise from you having conflicting priories and preferences with others. The human minds, if unaware, people often attributes faults and blame to the other side's charater flaws rather than reflecting first what one has done to create the conflict in the first place. A coach can help you see the whole picture and empowers you to take actions to resolve the conflict without relying on the other side to change first. This often improves the situation quickly becasue people are usually reciprical when they notice change in behaviour and attitudes towards them.

Team conflicts can happen as a result of he lack of team agreement, which can be easily resolved by having clear and explicit team norms and agreement put in place. However, real team conflict can be quite difficult to resolve the help of a team coach, especially if the team leader cannot see how he/she is part of the problem.

Orgnisational conflicts can arrive from many things and one of the common root sources is the lack of good governance. A coach with a deep understand of corporate governance can guide you to define key issues from all levels of the organisation and find most effective solutions for leaders that otherwise could be easily missed.

How is Coaching different from Mediation?

When your cannot resolve the conflict on your own, it is time to seek the support of a mediator or a conflict coach because the cost is 90% cheapter than litigation and the matter can be resolved in a matter of weeks, rather than years.

Mediation is a series of 1-to-1 and multiple-party meetings with a mediator to resolve a conflict as quickly and cost effectively as possible.  The cost is only about 10% compared to litigation and matters can be resolved in a matter of a few weeks.

Ideally, resolve a conflict together with the otherside through mediation is the best solution, because the mediator is impartial and can help both partiies identify real interests and negotiate mutually benefitial agreements.

Conflict Coaching is a 1-to-1 coaching process that helps you find the best solutions to resolve a conflict with the support of a coach.

In reality, the majority of people involved in care not willing to attend mediation meetings. What you can do in this senario is to resolve the conflict on your own or with the support of a conflict coach 1-to-1.

Is Selana the consultant for me?

I have worked in Hong Kong, Beijing, Canada, and the UK in the past 30 years as a music specialist before qualifying as a professional coach, mediator, and corporate governance consultant.  Through my training in music, leadership, and dispute resolution, I specialise in helping intercultural teams in cultural organisations that deal with complex negotiations with multiple stakeholders.

Growing up multi-cultually affords me many opportunities to learn from people who are different from me. My journey of diversity, equity and inclusion started 30 years ago and I am still learning about it now.  I want to invite you to walk with me as I truly appreciate how each person is unique and valuable and I believe our society will be a much better place when people learn how to offer high-value and low-cost moves to each other to create more win-win scenerios.

My artistic and humanistic approach attract clients who love to tell their stories either orally, visually and musically. I offer a safe space for you to tell and own your stories. I trust your inner wisdom and I believe you have all the resources within you to find the best solutions for yourself. I will support you to write your conflict story in a way that can help you bounce forward to a better future.

The journey will be much easier when you let me walk along side you to show you how it is possible to gain back your inner peace, interpersonal understanding and respect, team cohesion and good corporate governance with diversity, equity and inclusion at the heart so your busiess can thrive into the future. â€‹
